Cycas panzhihuaensis ( Chinese  攀枝花 苏铁 , Pinyin Pānzhīhuā sūtiě ; German Panzhihua sago palm fern) is a species of the sago palm ferns ( Cycas ), the only genus in the Cycadaceae family. It is named after the city of Panzhihua .

description

Cycas panzhihuaensis is a woody plant that usually reaches heights of 1 to 2, rarely up to 3 meters and a trunk diameter of 15 to 20 centimeters.

The crown consists of 30 to 80 leaf fronds. The pinnate leaves are gray-green, 70 to 150 centimeters long and flat with 140 to 250 opposite pinna. With a length of 7 to 25 centimeters, the petiole has 15 to 25% of the total length of the leaf; it is thorny for 50 to 70% of its length. The basal feathers are 5 to 7 inches long. In the middle area of the leaf, the pinna are 12 to 23 centimeters long and 5 to 7 millimeters wide with an angle of 50 to 60 ° to the rachis . The narrow, triangular, soft and woolly hairy lower leaves (cataphylls) are 6 to 9 centimeters long and persistent.

Cycas panzhihuaensis is dioeciously segregated ( diocesan ).

The male plants form cones ; they are spindle-shaped or oval-cylindrical, yellow, have a length of 25 to 50 centimeters and a diameter of 8 to 14 centimeters. The microsporophylls are 40 to 60 millimeters long and 18 to 32 millimeters wide; their fertile zone is 30 to 40 millimeters long and the sterile area is 8 to 11 millimeters long. The pollen flight takes place in April to May.

The female plants form more than 30 megasporophylls ; they are 11 to 21 centimeters long and yellowish to brownish woolly hairy with one to five ovules .

The almost spherical seeds are 25 to 35 millimeters long and 22 to 30 millimeters wide. The sarcotesta is red to orange and 1.5 millimeters thick. The seeds ripen between September and October.

Occurrence

Cycas panzhihuaensis grows in the mountainous regions of the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan between 1100 and 2000 m. It is spread in Sichuan in Dukou渡口, Ningnan宁南, Dechang德昌, Yanyuan盐源, in Yunnan in Yuanmou元谋.

In the Renhe district of Panzhihua on the border of the Sichuan province with Yunnan , a state nature reserve for Cycas panzhihuaensis has been established (Panzhihua Sutie Guojiaji Ziran Baohuqu 攀枝花 苏铁 国家级 自然 保护 Panzhihua Dukou Cycad National Nature Reserve).

Cycas panzhihuaensis thrives in grassy locations and in thickets on limestone and sandstone in the arid Yangtze Valley at altitudes between 1100 and 2000 meters only in southwestern Sichuan and northern Yunnan .

Systematics

Based on specimen copies collected by Si-Yuan Yang and Bin Wu in 1979 near Dukou (Panzhihua), the Chinese gardeners Lin Zhou and Si-Yuan Yang described the plant under the taxon Cycas panzhihuaensis in 1981 . The same issue of the magazine also published a description of another species of Cycas baguanheensis in the genus by the Chinese botanists Li Kuo Fu and Shu Zhi Cheng of the Institute of Botany in Beijing, which were collected on bulk copies from the same 1979 expedition, collected by Yang and Wu in Baguan He near Panzhihua, based. It is now assumed that the specimens described under Cycas baguanheensis are only a stunted form of the same species Cycas panzhihuaensis from a less attractive location.
