Zoltán Czibor [ ˈzoltaːn ˈʦibor ] (born August 23, 1929 in Kaposvár ; † September 1, 1997 ) was a Hungarian football player .
Hungary
The only 1.69 m tall Czibor was one of the best left wingers of his time. Sándor Mezei, the coach of the Hungarian junior team at the time, discovered him at a game between two third-rate teams. Back then, Czibor also worked as a train driver. He played at Ferencvárosi TC in Budapest from 1948 to 1949 and then moved first to Csepeli Vasas and then to Honvéd Budapest , where he played with Ferenc Puskás and Sándor Kocsis . These three formed the attacking trio that, supported by Nándor Hidegkuti , achieved world fame in the Hungarian national team in the early 1950s . In 1952 he was Olympic champion in Helsinki , and in 1953 he was part of the Hungarian national team, which won 6: 3 as the first team from the continent against England at Wembley Stadium . When the Hungarian selection for the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland went, she was four years unbeaten and the big favorite for the title. In the final against Germany , Czibor scored a 2-0 lead for Hungary before his team unexpectedly lost 3-2.
After the uprising against the communist regime in Hungary in 1956 and the invasion of the Soviet Union , the team broke up. Players like Czibor, Puskás , Kocsis and Kubala went into exile and never played for Hungary again.
Spain
Zoltán Czibor came to FC Barcelona in 1957 through the mediation of László Kubala . A year later, Kocsis was signed by the Catalans, while Puskás played for Real Madrid from 1958 . With Barcelona, Czibor was able to win the Spanish championship in 1959 and 1960, and also the Copa del Rey in 1959, despite the great competition from the multiple European Cup winners Real Madrid . The trade fair cup , a forerunner of the UEFA Cup , was won in 1958 and 1960. In 1960, Barcelona failed in the semi-finals of the European Cup to Real Madrid with 1: 3 each, with Czibor missing in both games because of a dispute over the payment of the bonus. In 1961, Barcelona finally managed to end Real Madrid's five-year winning streak in this competition in the second round of the European Cup. As a result, they reached the final against Benfica Lisbon , which was played this year in Bern's Wankdorf Stadium. Exactly in the stadium where Czibor and Kocsis had suffered the greatest disappointment of their football careers when they lost the World Cup final in 1954. This time the stadium did not bring them any luck either. Both Hungarians scored a goal, but FC Barcelona lost the final 3-2.
In 1963, at the end of his career, Czibor moved to local rivals Espanyol Barcelona for two years . In 1965 he ended his active career.
