The DKW F93 / 94 is a German passenger car that Auto Union manufactured from 1955 to 1959. In September 1955 it was presented as the large DKW 3 = 6 (type F93). It replaced the DKW F91 special class .

General

The F93 differs from F91 by a more powerful engine with 38 hp (28 kW) at 4200 min -1 , the cm by 10 wider body, a uniformly curved windshield and the chrome combined oval grille . The 3 = 6 owes its name to the comparison of three - cylinder two-stroke engines with six - cylinder four-stroke engines : both types have the same number of working strokes per crankshaft revolution. The built from 1930 to 1940 DKW models with four cylinder - V-type engine and two double-acting Kolbenspülpumpen contributed similar additional designation DKW 4 = 8 .

DKW offered the F93 series in three versions: sedan normal with three-speed gearbox and almost no trim, sedan special with four-speed gearbox (1st gear not synchronized), all sorts of shiny parts and useful items such as a glove compartment lid and as a coupé with fully retractable side windows and two-tone interior. As a four-door sedan with a longer body, which is also used by taxi drivers, this design, available from 1957, was given the model designation F94. Now the Kombi Universal was also available. The engine now had 40 HP (29 kW) and the radiator grille was given a fine-meshed aluminum grille instead of the pressed sheet metal part. From September 1957, the two-door sedans were delivered with the doors hinged at the front, while the four-door and station wagons kept the rear-hinged ones. For a surcharge, all versions were available with the automatic clutch Saxomat .

The takeover of Auto Union by Daimler-Benz was also noticeable in the names: From mid-1958, the vehicles were marketed as DKW 900 before they were replaced by Auto Union 1000 .

From September 1955 to July 1959 a total of 137,800 vehicles were built, including 19,531 station wagons. Karmann built 667 two and four-seater convertibles.

Based on the DKW chassis of the large DKW 3 = 6, Dannenhauer & Stauss in Stuttgart created the DKW Monza .

The two-stroke engine installed lengthways at the front is water-cooled. The water-air heat exchanger (cooler) is raised behind the engine, the cooling circuit works without a water pump ( thermosiphon ) and therefore needs a cooler hose with a large flow cross-section. The distributorless ignition system works with three ignition interrupters on the front of the crankshaft and 3 ignition coils. A V-belt drives the alternator and radiator fan. The air inlet with filter and the carburetor are on the right when viewed in the direction of travel. There is no starting point for a crank.
