Between 1934 and 1941 the built German Reichsbahn total of 691 steam locomotives until then as Series 55 25-56 eingruppierten Prussian G 8.1 microns; this resulted in the series 56 2–8 . The four-couplers previously without running axles were given a Bissel axle with 100 mm side play at the front and thus became type 1'D locomotives. The running axis allowed a higher speed, and the locomotives could also be used in front of passenger trains. In addition, the average axle load was lower, so that the locomotives could also be used on branch lines. During the renovation, the boiler was moved forward and also raised a little. A ballast weight was also installed over the front coupling axles. The two-cylinder superheated steam engine remained unchanged. The locomotives were given company numbers between 56 201 and 56 891, although the numbering was not consecutive.

The Deutsche Bundesbahn took over 368 of the 410 existing copies after the Second World War and retired them until 1968. The last one was 56 241, which should still have the new number 056 241-3. The Deutsche Reichsbahn decommissioned its locomotives, which were run as class 56.1 with the conversion to EDP numbers, by adding a -1- as an additional digit in the serial number by the end of 1970.

The 56 218, 258, 317, 543 and 598 remained on Austrian territory after the Second World War. The 56 317 and 543 were retired in 1953. The remaining machines formed the ÖBB series 656 while retaining the serial numbers . All three machines were taken out of service as early as 1956.

The machines that remained in Poland after 1945 were given the PKP series designation Tr5 . Tr5-65 (formerly 56 511) has been preserved and is now owned by the Wolsztyn Railway Museum .

The vehicles were coupled with tenders of the types pr 3 T16.5, pr 3 T20 or pr 2'2 'T21.5.
