history

Foundation of the German Red Cross

In 1859 the Swiss Henry Dunant got caught between fighting troops in Solferino . After the battle had been fought, he realized with horror that there was no help for the injured. Together with volunteers from the village, Dunant organized the supplies for the people, regardless of which side of the fighting they belonged to. After his return to Switzerland , Henry Dunant founded the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which quickly found global approval and is now the largest humanitarian aid organization in the world.

Women's associations were an important element of the movement, supported by upper class women or nobles . In addition to the humanitarian idea, the Red Cross idea offered them a foundation to enable women interested in vocational training to receive qualified nursing training and to give these unmarried and working women social status. The women received theoretical and practical training in schools, primarily from doctors. In order to secure the care of the sisters in case of illness and in old age, the "sister insurance association " was established in 1904, today organized as the company pension scheme of the DRK pension fund.

Foundation of the regional DRK sisterhood in the Palatinate

In 1872 the Sisterhood of the Red Cross was founded in Munich , whose Red Cross Sisters worked in the Palatinate. In 1873 the mill owner Philippine Sauter from Neustadt donated a spacious new building to the sisters, which was to be used as an asylum for nurses and as a hospice to take in the wounded and which became the first independent outpost in the Palatinate. Due to the rapid expansion of the fields of work, the Presidium of the DRK decided in 1942 to found the new Sisterhood of the Palatinate. In 1987 this was merged with the Saarland Sisterhood, founded in 1912.
