The petrol - motor coaches of the series DSB M 1-3 were 1925 by DSB (DSB) as the first railcar in Denmark procured to operate on less frequented rail lines.

At the beginning of railcar procurement in Denmark, all DSB vehicles were numbered starting with "M" until the introduction of the series .

history

As in other European countries, attempts have been made in Denmark to make passenger service on less frequented routes cost-effective and to dispense with steam-driven trains. For this purpose, the Danske Statsbaner had three gasoline-powered railcars built by the Danish locomotive factory Triangel in Odense in 1925 . The vehicles had the serial numbers 895 to 897.

technology

The railcars, which received components from road vehicle construction, had an engine front end similar to that used later in the Wismar rail buses in Germany. The engine was housed in this. Each vehicle had 24 seats and a luggage compartment. The power was transmitted through a mechanical 3-speed gearbox .

In order not to have to turn around at the terminus, two motor coaches were often coupled together with the motorless ends. This meant that there was a driver's cab in each direction. For this purpose, the railcars were equipped with a central buffer coupling, but this was replaced in 1933 by normal couplings and the addition of buffers .

First use

After delivery, the railcars were assigned to the machine depot in Århus Østbanegård (Århus Ø). At that time the station was the terminus of the Århus – Greena railway line and is now a stop on the Aarhus Nærbane . As early as 1926, they were relocated to Copenhagen - Østerport in order to serve the route between Frederiksberg and Hellerup from there .

DSB MA (1928)

In 1928, the three railcars were added to the MA series with the introduction of series . Previously, all DSB railcars had been numbered consecutively starting with "M" . The MA series was used again in 1963, as the vehicles described here had already been taken out of service at that time.

In 1934 the vehicle numbers were changed and the MA 1–3 vehicles became the MA 48–50 railcars .

When there was a shortage of fuel during the German occupation , they were parked in Næstved from 1940 to 1941 . There it was renumbered again in MA 601–603 . MA 601 and MA 603 were brought to the Helgoland machine depot (depot) in Svanemøllen and remained there during the entire Second World War . MA 602 was sold to Varde – Grindsted Jernbane (VaGJ) in 1942.

The two vehicles that remained with DSB were relocated to Gedser in 1945 . From there, the two railcars took different routes and only traveled on different routes for short periods of time.

  • MA 601 : Awarded to Gribskovbanen from October 1946 to April 1947, and from August 1947 to January 1948 to Høng – Tølløse Jernbane . After DSB took over the previously private Slangerupbane on April 1, 1948, the railcar took over part of the traffic there. This is followed by another rental from May to June 1949 to Østsjællandske Jernbaneselskab , which in turn is followed by a deployment from Lygten on the Slangerupbane from 1950 to 1952 .
  • MA603 : Used from Gedser from 1945 to 1947, then awarded to Østsjællandske Jernbaneselskab from November 1947 to February 1948. He then served the traffic on the Slangerupbane from 1948 to 1949. This was followed by missions from Gedser until 1951, from Nørrebro in 1952 and again from Gedser in 1953.

In 1953 both vehicles were brought to Centralværkstedet København ( Cvk Kh ) and retired there.

VaGJ M 4

MA 602 was acquired in 1942 by Varde – Grindsted Jernbane (VaGJ) for use on the Varde – Nørre Nebel railway . The railcar was in use until 1958 and was then taken out of service and was still in Varde Vest station in 1959.
