Dafnousia ( Greek Δαφνούσια ( n. Pl. ), Also Dafnoussia ) has been a municipality in central Greece since 2011 . The former community was named after Daphnous, the ancient name of Agios Konstantinos .
location
The municipality belongs to the historical Lokris landscape . It is on the coast of the Central Greek mainland opposite the island of Euboea located (Evia). In the west Dafnousia bordered on Agios Konstantinos, in the southwest on Elatia , in the south on Atalandi . In the north and east, the coast of the northern Gulf of Evia , into which Cape Arkitsa, which belongs to the municipality, protrudes, formed the municipal boundary.
character
The majority of the area of the former municipality lies in a fertile coastal plain, which is cut by the Autobahn 1 and used for agriculture. Livanates is known for growing potatoes (the designation of origin is protected). Vegetables, olives, tobacco and cotton are also grown. Arkitsa has a port and as a landing stage for the ferry to Loutra Edipsou on Evia has a certain traffic significance . The village of Goulemi is already in the hilly foothills of the Kallidromos Mountains.
Administrative division
With the municipal reform in 1997 , the municipality of Dafnousia was formed from the amalgamation of three rural municipalities, with the municipal administration in Livanates. In the course of the administrative reform in 2010, this municipality became a municipality in the new municipality of Lokri . The municipality is subdivided into a municipality and two local communities that elect local representatives.

history
Livanates was settled from the earliest times. The hill in Livanates, called Pirgos, appears to have arisen from repeated heaps to protect against sieges. It is said to be Kynos , the port of Opus , mentioned by Homer in the ship catalog of the Iliad , where, according to tradition, Deucalion and Pyrrha lived after the Deucalionic flood . Archaeological excavations in the north-western area showed that the site was continuously inhabited from the Copper Age ( 3000 BC) to the Byzantine period (5th to 6th centuries AD).
In 1740 the Armatole Andreas Androutsos was born in Livanates , the father of Odysseas Androutsos , a hero of the Greek Revolution .
In the Arkitsa area was the ancient alopi . Here Athens landed its troops under Cleopompus to subdue Lokris and rule Euboea . The enterprise ended with the defeat of Lokroi and the destruction of Thronion. According to Thucydides , Alopi was destroyed by an earthquake.
Today's Arkitsa was built from 1750 by newcomers from the surrounding area, but also from the Peloponnese. In 1810 there were about thirty houses. At this time, Queen Amalia had the first school and the church of Agios Georgios built. In 1894 the place was destroyed by an earthquake, after which it was rebuilt.
Attractions
Metamorphosis Church at Livanates
The Metamorphosis Monastery is located in lovely green surroundings, about 4 km from Livanates. Formerly a monastery, it was converted into a nunnery in 1977. During the Ottoman rule, the monastery, which had large estates, was very wealthy and powerful. When a Turk was murdered near the monastery, it was damaged in retaliation by the Turkish occupiers. During the Greek Revolution it supported Odysseas Androutsos . After Greece declared independence, it was closed by King Otto and the land was distributed to farmers. The icon of Metamorphosis (Transfiguration of Christ) dates from the middle of the 19th century.
Agia Ekaterina Church
In the Melidoni district is the early Christian basilica from the 4th or 5th century with preserved mosaics.
