Dafydd Llywelyn (born January 10, 1939 in South Wales, † March 25, 2013 in Munich ) was a Welsh composer , pianist , conductor and teacher .

biography

The musician, who was born in South Wales, received his first piano lessons from his father, and later from priests in a monastic boarding school in Central England. His other teachers include the British pianist Tom Bromley, Johann Trygvasson ( Vladimir Ashkenazy's father-in-law ) and Peter Feuchtwanger (nephew of the writer Lion Feuchtwanger ). An important musical influence arose for him through the encounter and later close friendship with the pianist Shura Cherkassky , who brought him closer to the tradition of polyphonic piano playing of the old masters. He later received important impulses from Pierre Boulez , Karlheinz Stockhausen and Kirill Kondraschin. He studied music, medicine, criminology and theology in Birmingham and London before moving to Cologne . From 1971 he lived in Munich, from 1984 until his death with his partner Hedy Schmitt.

When he was three years old, his mother died of leukemia , after which he said he began composing. The deep religiosity of his works, which he already wrote meditatively inspired in his younger years, as well as the tragedy of many pieces are largely based on the early loss of his mother. He composed his first major piece of music, Dies Irae , at the age of twelve. In 1966 he was involved in the German premiere of Erik Satie's Vexations . In the late 1960s he recorded film music with the band The Lonely Ones (later The Joint ) and taught their keyboardist Rick Davies , who shortly thereafter co-founded the band Supertramp .

Llywelyn's catalog raisonné includes compositions for solo instruments as well as film music, rock and jazz. As a pianist and conductor, he has given concerts in Europe, the USA and Canada. As a teacher, since moving to Munich in 1971, he promoted the next generation of music as a piano teacher. The pianist Roberta Pili is regarded as his direct musical-pianistic successor, as she enthusiastically passes on the old tradition of polyphonic playing to the younger generation of pianists in the spirit of her teacher. In 1993/94 Llywelyn took over a visiting professorship for composition, piano and musical analysis at the University of Belgrade .

Llywelyn is known for his timeless, hyperpolyphonic piano compositions. These are used by leading pianists, among others. a. Boris Berezovsky , Nathan Carterette, İdil Biret and Severin von Eckardstein , played all over the world.
