Dalriada is a Hungarian folk metal band founded in 1998 , which tries to create a sophisticated synthesis between metal and Hungarian folk music . They are one of the most popular metal bands in Hungary and have received a large number of positive reviews from the specialist press.

Foundation and name

The predecessor band of the group "Dalriada" was founded in 1998 in Sopron . The professional musical activity with a relatively stable line-up did not begin until February 2003, however. From that time on it was called "Echo of Dalriada". "Dalriada" was a kingdom of Celtic Scots between approx. 300 and 800. According to some philological research, "dalriada" can also be an old Hungarian word that means "battle song" (csatadal) or "alarm song" (riadó dal). The band added “Echo of” to this name because at the time of naming there was also an Australian folk rock band under this name. In March 2007, however, this addition was deleted from the name, and since then the band has only been called "Dalriada".

Music genre

Dalriada herself defines her style as epic folk metal. Since its inception, the band has tried to create a sophisticated synthesis between metal and Hungarian folk music - using other musical influences (e.g. Renaissance music ). In their songs they sing about Hungarian history and bring its legends to life. That's why all the songs are written in Hungarian. Another special feature of the group in the metal scene is that a woman's voice (Laura Binder) dominates the text in most of the songs. The male singer is András Ficzek.

history

"A Walesi Bárdok" & "Fergeteg"

After their first local and regional concerts, the group released a demo in December 2003 with the setting of the ballad by the Hungarian poet of the 19th century. Century János Arany A Walesi Bárdok (The Bards of Wales) in 3 movements. This demo was followed by good reviews and a number of concert invitations.

"A Walesi Bárdok" and other songs by the band were often broadcast on regional radio programs and internet radio stations in 2004. Dalriada was voted Band of the Month on the website “diaksziget.com” in August . Her first album was released in November under the title "Fergeteg" (Storm). It contained u. a. the material of the demo published the year before, the setting of the Arany ballad “A Walesi Bárdok” . The band also took part in the Moby Dick tribute album "BálnaVadÁszok" with the reinterpretation of the song "Beteg a Föld" (The earth is sick). At the end of the year, Dalriada was rated as “The greatest hope of 2005” in a poll of readers of the Hungarian “HammerWorld” hard rock and heavy metal magazine. In addition, her first published song "A Walesi Bárdok " reached sixth place in this poll in the category "Song of the Year".

"Jégbontó"

The band gave many concerts in 2005, and by the end of the year their second album was completed. In February 2006 this CD was released under the title "Jégbontó" (Icebreaker). In the next year she reached second place in the voting for the Hungarian Metal Awards “HangSúly” in the category “Best Album 2006”. Dalriada was able to achieve high audiences for the first time at her nationwide concerts. At the end of 2006, the band's third album was recorded. In a poll of the readers of “HammerWorld” magazine this was rated “The most anticipated album of 2007”.

"Kikelet"

On March 12, 2007, the third album "Kikelet" (Lenz) was released, which was a great success both in the trade press and with the public. In contrast to the previous albums, the band's instruments were supplemented with a violin (played by guest musician Attila Fajkusz ). The album was the fourth best-selling CD in Hungary in the release week. The readers of “HammerWorld” magazine voted the band among the top ten in several categories this year (among others, the group's singer, Laura Binder, was rated “Best Hungarian Singer” and Dalriada was rated as “Best Hungarian Band” sixth place). In addition, the CD “Kikelet” was voted third in the vote for the Hungarian Metal Awards “HangSúly” in the category “Best Studio Production 2007”. During the tour following the release of the CD, the band gave concerts in almost all parts of Hungary and was invited to numerous well-known festivals.

"Szelek"

On 14 April 2008, the fourth CD of Dalriada was titled "Szelek" (winds), whose public presentation on the Paganfest held in Budapest. This album was the second best-selling CD in Hungary in the week of its release. From September 2008 to February 2009 the band's biggest concert tour to date took place under the title “Szelek Szárnyán Turné” (On the Wings of the Winds Tour). Dalriada was honored several times in 2009 by both the public and the professional public. The band was once again voted into the top ten in several categories by the readers of "HammerWorld" magazine (including fourth place among the readers' favorite Hungarian bands). "Arany album"

In the summer of 2009, the band recorded their new CD, which was released on September 28, 2009 under the title "Arany-album", in addition to many festival appearances (including Rockmaraton, Hegyalja Fesztivál, Sziget Fesztivál ) . It only contains settings of poems by the Hungarian national poet János Arany (including / newly orchestrated / some songs from previous albums of the band: "A Walesi Bárdok" by "Fergeteg" , "A Rab Gólya" / Der Gefangene Storch / also by "Fergeteg" and the 1st part of the poem "Szondi Két Apródja" / Szondi's two pages / from "Jégbontó" and its 2nd part from "Kikelet" ). The band's instruments were supplemented by others during the studio recordings (including bass , viola , violin and flute ). These were played by three members of the Fajkusz band . With the "Arany-album" Dalriada won the "HangSúly Hungarian Metal Award 2009", a national band competition with 70 participants.

"Ígéret"

The sixth studio album called "Ígéret" was released in February 2011. For the first time not only Hungarian lyrics were used, but with a guest appearance by the singer Jonne Järvelä of the Finnish band Korpiklaani , the album also contains a song with Finnish interludes. "Ígéret" was also the band's first release on the international market. The review of the album in German Metal Hammer highlighted the mixing of different metal styles such as Gothic, Thrash and Death Metal with Hungarian folklore as a special element of the band and also noted that Korpiklaani as a whole had a great musical influence on Dalriada.

Eurovision Song Contest

In January 2013, the band took part in the Hungarian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , but could not qualify for the final in Sweden .
