Damian Hieronymus Johannes Freiherr von Boeselager (born March 8, 1988 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German management consultant , journalist and politician ( Volt Germany ). In the 2019 European elections he won a mandate for the Volt Germany party and has since been a member of the ninth European Parliament as part of the Greens / EFA group .

Career

Damian Boeselager comes from the extensive Boeselager family . The grandfather Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager was a resistance fighter under National Socialism . His father is the banker Georg Freiherr von Boeselager and his mother Huberta, née Thiel.

Boeselager is Catholic and the youngest of four children, born in Frankfurt am Main. He passed his Abitur at the Aloisius College in Bonn - Bad Godesberg . From 2008 to 2011 he studied at the University of Bayreuth the Bachelor's program Philosophy and Economics ( Philosophy and Economics ), 2016-2018 the Master's program in Public Administration ( Public Administration ) at the Columbia University in New York and the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.

In 2012 Boeselager initiated a journalistic travel project, Euroskop , with Bernhard Clemm and Jan Stöckmann , which took him to 20 European capitals. The aim of the project was to discuss the future of the continent with young people in Europe and also to interview journalists, scientists, politicians and activists. From 2013 to 2016 Boeselager worked for McKinsey & Company as a management consultant. During his time at the consulting company, he said he advised authorities and an organization for orphans.

Political work

In 2017 Boeselager founded Volt Europa together with Andrea Venzon from Italy and Colombe Cahen-Salvador from France as a “pan-European”, “pragmatic” and “progressive” party. He was Vice President of Volt Europe and, together with Marie-Isabell Heiss, was Germany's top candidate for Volt in the 2019 European elections . During the European election campaign, Boeselager did not have any income-making activities and, according to his own statements, received financial support from his family.

In the European elections, Volt Germany won one of the 96 German mandates with 0.7 percent of the vote, making it the only national association of the pan-European party to enter parliament. In an internal vote, Volt members were able to decide which parliamentary group Boeselager should join; the options were ALDE (now Renew Europe ), The Greens / EFA or remain non-attached. The Volt members decided that Boeselager should join the group The Greens / EFA. Boeselager followed the vote and represents the parliamentary group in the parliamentary committee for constitutional questions . He is also a deputy member of the Budget Committee , the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs .
