Life

Daniel Leo Ryan was ordained a priest for the Joliet Diocese of Illinois on May 3, 1956 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Joliet, Illinois and titular bishop of Surista on August 14, 1981 . The Bishop of Joliet in Illinois, Joseph Leopold Imesch , donated him episcopal ordination on September 30 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Raymond James Vonesh , Auxiliary Bishop in Joliet, Illinois, and Daniel William Kucera OSB , Bishop of Salina .

He was named Bishop of Springfield, Illinois on November 22, 1983, and was appointed to the office on January 18 of the next year. On October 19, 1999, Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation.

Misconduct in office

Ryan's resignation was preceded by allegations that he had promoted the secrecy of cases of sexual abuse by priests in his diocese. These and other allegations against Ryan personally did not fall silent even after his resignation, so that a church investigation took place between February 2005 and July 2006. In its final report of August 2, 2006, this came to the conclusion that Ryan had promoted a culture of secrecy and thus prevented dutiful priests from reporting abuse by other clergymen. The report also accused him of having been involved in "inappropriate sexual acts" and of having used his office to cover up these acts.
