history

The foundation worked in secret for many years and has only recently moved into the focus of public perception as a patron and patron of the arts and crafts . The range of funding has been increasingly expanded in the course of its existence.

The original capital comprised 1.7 million marks in the form of securities , mortgages (rights to third-party real estate) and land . However, the inflation that followed shortly afterwards quickly reduced the share of mobile goods . For a long time, the stable properties were mainly leased to the Meiller-Kipper company . There have been rental houses there since 1995.

After 1923 the financial situation stabilized. During the Second World War there was another significant economic cut and the organization's activities had to be severely restricted. Nevertheless, the foundation was able to stabilize its financial situation relatively quickly and continues to support it with significant sums of money.

The current office building at Landshuter Allee 12-14 has a gross floor area of around 10,000 m². The inauguration ceremony took place on July 19, 2001. The new roundabout on the property was named Therese-Danner-Platz in 1997 .

collection

The foundation's own collection was started in 1927. Many of the exhibits were purchased from the winners as part of their own competitions. In the meantime, the collection was almost completely destroyed by bombing during the Second World War.

From 1983, contemporary jewelry was again purchased and systematically collected. The collection includes almost 500 individual pieces.

The international contemporary jewelry collection was on 25 November 1999 by agreement with the Bavarian Minister of Culture as a permanent loan to the Neue Sammlung - State Museum of Applied Arts passed in Munich - already in view of its entry into the Pinakothek der Moderne - situated there since March 6, 2004 in the 285 m² so-called Danner rotunda.

The first presentation was curated in 1999 by Hermann Jünger and Otto Künzli . Jünger headed the jewelry class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich until 1990, Künzli followed him to the chair in 1991. In 2010 the goldsmith and jewelry designer Karl Fritsch took over the curation of the Danner rotunda. In 2014 - for the 10th anniversary - a third new curation followed, by Otto Künzli. The fourth new presentation took place in 2020 by Mikiko Minewaki, Hans Strofer and Alexander Blank; In addition, the first inventory catalog of the jewelry collection was published.

Grants and awards

The purpose of the foundation was to promote the arts and crafts in Bavaria. In addition to awards in connection with financial donations, there were grants for attending schools, travel allowances, grants for participation in exhibitions and trade fairs, purchases or orders to support arts and crafts, and grants for self-employed arts and crafts.

After the inflation from 1914 to 1923 , the range of support was increasingly expanded. In addition to the previous claims, interest-free loans for the realization of impressive designs and one-time investment grants for company start-ups were granted.

After the end of the war, another competition was held in 1946. In the past decades, scholarships have also been awarded and subsidized.

Danner Commemorative Medal

The medal in connection with monetary bonuses was awarded annually up to and including 1932 on June 16, the so-called Benno Day and thus the name day of the deceased Benno Danner, to recognized representatives of all fields of arts and crafts, to masters in gold, to journeymen in silver and to apprentices in bronze.

The prize was first awarded in 1984 as part of the state competition for handicrafts in Bavaria, which has been held every three years since then. The aim of the competition is to increase, innovate and further develop a rich handicraft heritage in Bavaria. The award given by an international jury has meanwhile enjoyed supraregional importance. The main prize, which is endowed with € 15,000, is supplemented by several honorary prizes totaling € 12,000.

Bavarian Photo Prize

The Bavarian Photo Prize replaced the photo grant that had been awarded annually since 1983 and was advertised every three years between 1991 and 1998.

Board

The foundation's honorary board of directors is elected for three years at a time and, in accordance with the statutes, consists of a state representative, a representative appointed by the Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association , a member of the board of directors or supervisory board of Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechselbank (now Unicredit Bank ) in Munich and three merited artisans, traditionally among the latter there was always a member of the Rothmüller family.
