Karl Rothmüller

Karl Rothmüller (* 1860 in Munich ; † January 23, 1930 ibid) was a Bavarian goldsmith , purveyor to the royal Bavarian court and professor of the fine arts. He was one of the most important German goldsmiths of his time and was one of the main representatives of the Munich jewelry art, which was in its prime at the turn of the century.

Life

Rothmüller was a student of Fritz von Miller . After studying at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich and the School of Applied Arts in Vienna as well as working stays in Berlin, Paris and London, he opened his studio in 1886 and from 1897 sent the exhibitions in the Glaspalast .

In 1900 he took part in the Paris World Exhibition . Between 1904 and 1914, Rothmüller was considered by the leading critics to be the epitome of a modern German jewelry artist who preserved his peculiarity compared to his role model René Lalique . In 1908 he was awarded the title of Royal Bavarian Court Goldsmith. He opened jewelry stores on Müllerstrasse, in Hermann Volkhardt'sRegina-Palast-Hotel ” at Maximiliansplatz  5 and on Perusastrasse.

Rothmüller was a long-time member of the board of the Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association . As a friend of the Benno and Therese Danner family , he exerted significant influence on the latter when the latter founded the Danner Foundation after the death of her husband in 1920 . In 1925 he was appointed professor of fine arts.

The company P. Rath - Karl Rothmüller , which he co-founded, is located at Brienner Strasse 10.

Peter Rath (1846–1922) was the court jeweler of Ludwig II. In 1942, among other things, the Rath company was commissioned to manufacture 20 copies of the German Cross in gold with diamonds .
