Hermann Volkhardt

Hermann Volkhardt (born April 19, 1851 in Amorbach , † December 24, 1909 in Munich ) was a German confectioner , pastry chef and hotelier .

biography

His father Gottlob Volkhardt was a book printer and newspaper publisher , and his son Hermann was originally supposed to do an apprenticeship as a printer in order to continue the family tradition. Hermann Volkhardt, however, developed a preference for confectionery, which was decisive for his career choice. At the age of 14 he began an apprenticeship as a confectioner in the Amorbacher Café Stang, which he broke off at the age of 16 and continued as an apprenticeship as a confectioner and confectioner in Hamburg . Then he continued his education in Vienna .

In 1875 he opened a café in Munich. A few years later he took over the Hotel Fürstenhof in Munich and had it equipped with electric lighting. Volkhardt acquired the Bayerischer Hof in Munich's old town in 1897 for 2.85 million gold marks . He had the building transformed into a grand hotel and initiated its development into the largest hotel in Europe.

He was also the owner of the Regina-Palast-Hotel at Maximiliansplatz  5 and the Café Priness in Munich as well as the Hotel Axelmannstein in Bad Reichenhall .

Hermann Volkhardt was a supporter of Sebastian Kneipp's teaching and gymnastics and therefore loved exercise in the fresh air and running barefoot .

In 1909, Hermann Volkhardt died of a stroke at the age of 58. His grave is on the old southern cemetery in Munich (grave field 16 - row 3 - place 46) location .

family

Volkhardt had three sons, one third of whom he owned in the in-house wine wholesaler of the Volkhardt Brothers of the Bavarian Court. After his death, his son of the same name, Dr. Hermann Volkhardt, his grandson Falk Volkhardt and his daughter Innegrit Volkhardt continued the business of the Bayerischer Hof. His son Ernst ran the Regina-Palast-Hotel and Wilhelm took over the wine wholesale business.
