Danzig is the debut album by the US heavy metal band Danzig . The album produced by Rick Rubin is now considered a metal classic.
Origin and style
At the time of its creation, the album by the new band of Samhain and Misfits singer Glenn Danzig was eagerly awaited. The style was similar to that of his previous bands, but was now mixed with bluesy, heavier rock, which is determined by the somewhat Doom- influenced riffs of guitarist John Christ . Danzig's singing is influenced by Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison . With Mother , the album contains Gdańsk's greatest hit, which became a chart success in 1993/94 in a live version.
The pieces Twist of Cain and Possession were originally written by Danzig for his former band Samhain . James Hetfield from Metallica sang the backing vocals on those tracks, Twist of Cain and Possession , but could not be mentioned in the booklet for contractual reasons.
reception
The record reached number 125 on the Billboard 200. In 1994 it was certified gold in the USA. In 2007 Rock Hard magazine put the album in 214th place on the best list selected by the editors. Marcus Schleutermann spoke of a "legendary debut". In addition to Mother , Twist of Cain and the "great sung" Soul on Fire are particularly enthusiastic . In the magazine's issue at the time, however, Thomas Kupfer only awarded 7.5 out of ten points. He described the "unusual" music as "dirty, street-oriented rock'n'roll, which conjures up a more than gloomy end-time mood and is highly recognizable ."
