Darijo Srna [ ˈdaːriɔ ˈsrna ] (born May 1, 1982 in Metković , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian football player . From 2003 to 2018 he was under contract with the Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk . For the 2018/19 season he moved to Cagliari Calcio in the Italian Serie A. He is the former team captain of the Croatian national team .
Career
society
Srna was discovered and signed by Hajduk Split scouts as a teenager .
In 2003 he moved with his teammate Stipe Pletikosa to Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. There, too, he quickly became a regular player, and later also captain of the team. With Schachtar he won the Ukrainian championship ten times and the UEFA Cup in 2009, preparing the decisive goal for 2-1 in the 2-1 final win after extra time against Werder Bremen and being named the "Man of the Game" with 147 ball contacts. After 15 years and over 500 competitive games for Shakhtar Donetsk, his contract expired in 2018.
In July 2018 he joined Cagliari Calcio for an initial year .
National team
Srna played 134 times for the Croatian national team and scored 22 goals. He made his debut on November 20, 2002 against Romania . He played in the qualifying tournament for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, in which he secured the participation of the Croatians in the penultimate and decisive game against Sweden with a penalty goal . At the 2006 World Cup he was used in all three preliminary round games and scored a goal in the last preliminary round game against Australia , which was not enough for a place in the round of 16. At the EM 2008 , Srna scored 1-0 for the Croatians in the second group game against Germany and thus contributed to the 2-1 victory of his team. In the end, Croatia became group winners and made it to the quarter-finals. There, Srna and the Croatians were eliminated on penalties against Turkey . After the EM Niko Kovač resigned from the national team; Srna succeeded him as captain of the national team.
On February 6, 2013, he, Stipe Pletikosa and Josip Šimunić made their 100th international match in a 4-0 win against South Korea . Srna scored his 20th international goal with the 2-0.
In the 2016 European Football Championship , Srna and Croatia won 1-0 in the preliminary round against Turkey. But the success was overshadowed by the death of his father Uzeir Srna, who died during the game after a long period of cancer. Srna was informed of his death after the game and then traveled back to his hometown Metković, where he attended his father's funeral. When there were doubts about Srna's participation in the second preliminary round match against the Czech Republic, the Croatian Football Association confirmed its participation on the day of the funeral. Srna was one of the players who played all four Croatian games over the full season until they were eliminated in the round of 16.
