Dario Di Palma (born November 6, 1932 in Rome , † October 24, 2004 there ) was an Italian cameraman .

Life

As a teenager, Di Palma came into the industry through his father, the chief electrician of the Roman Safa Palatino film and television studios, and was allowed to work for the first time in 1949 as an assistant in a film called Vogliamoci bene! contribute. In the following years he assisted the cameramen Gianni Di Venanzo and Carlo Di Palma , the latter his uncle, who was only seven and a half years older. In 1959, Dario Di Palma rose to become a simple cameraman under the leadership of his uncle, and in this position he was involved in the making of several popular Italian films, most recently Michelangelo Antonioni's The Red Desert . In the meantime he was allowed to lead the second unit team in 1961 as chief cameraman for the historical and sandal film Romulus and Remus .

From 1962 he worked regularly as chief cameraman. In the next two decades Dario Di Palma photographed mostly secondary films for mostly less important directors. He was able to deliver his better work in collaboration with directors such as Federico Fellini , Lina Wertmüller , Sergio Corbucci , Ettore Scola , Valerio Zurlini and Marguerite Duras . Dario was also behind the camera on two of his uncle Carlo Di Palma's three trips to film directing (Teresa la ladra and Qui comincia l'avventura) in the 1970s. After the suicide of his son on the set of a film with Scola ( The Dirty, the Ugly and the Common , 1976) Dario Di Palma gradually withdrew from the public; he is said to have struggled with depression. However, after he recovered, he was unable to gain a foothold in the film and television industries. Dario Di Palma died just three and a half months after his uncle Carlo.
