Dariusz Szwed (born April 25, 1967 in Cracow ) is a Polish politician , social activist, economist and one of the founders and from 2004 to 2011 one of the chairmen of the political green party Zieloni 2004 (together with the co-chair Małgorzata Tkacz-Janik) . He is running in the parliamentary elections as number 1 on the list of the Federation of Democratic Left in Chrzanów.

Szwed is a graduate of the Cracow University of Economics ( foreign trade theory ) and the University of Warsaw (postgraduate course - economic foundations of environmental policy) and is a member of the Group of the Greens / European Free Alliance in the European Parliament. In 2004 he was a delegate of the Greens in the European Green Party . He is a member of the European Association of Economists for the Environment and Natural Resources and co-founder and chairman of the Program Committee of the Council of the Green Institute.

Public activities

Dariusz Szwed worked as a consultant in the field of sustainable development for many institutions and organizations such as the World Bank , the Center for Environmental Law, Greenpeace , the Institute for Sustainable Development, Milieukontakt Eastern Europe, the Northern Alliance "Environment and Development", the organization for economic Cooperation and Development , the Regional Environmental Center, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, and the WWF .

At the beginning of the 1990s he worked in the Green Federation in Krakow. He organized protests against nuclear tests, including on Mururoa in the Pacific . From 1996–1997 he coordinated the European campaign “Menu for the Next Millennium” to promote sustainable agricultural development, fair trade and organic farming . As a result of this campaign, important regulations for the protection of consumers and the environment against genetically modified organisms were introduced into Polish law.

In the years 2000–2002, Szwed was an external expert for the Ministry for the Environment in the field of access to information and public participation in decision-making. In the 1999–2004 electoral term he was an advisor to the Green Group in the European Parliament for the candidate countries. Until November 2007, he and Cezary Łasiczka presented the program “Political Ecology” on the Tok FM radio .

Political activities and views

Since 2004 Dariusz Szwed was co-chairman of Zieloni 2004 . He coordinated the “Green Economy” and “Green Europe” campaigns. Szwed was an activist for the defense of the Rospuda Valley. He wrote an open letter to then Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński , in which he listed arguments for building the Via Baltica outside the Rospuda Marshes. In another open letter to Donald Tusk , he made ten demands on the Civic Platform - Farmers' Party coalition and supported Maciej Nowicki , who was appointed Minister for the Environment shortly afterwards.

In the electoral alliance Zieloni 2004 - Social Democracy of Poland - Partia Demokratyczna he was in the parliamentary elections in Poland 2005 candidate for the first place on the list of the Social Democrats of Poland in the 35th district. In February 2009 Szwed was co-initiator of the Coalition of Social Democracy of Poland, Partia Demokratyczna and Zieloni 2004 - “The Agreement for the Future”. On the list of the "Agreement for the Future - Center-Left", he ran for the European Parliament in the Pomerania region in 2009 . In the Newsweek Polska ranking he was among the 39 best candidates for the European Parliament. As the only candidate among 99 people in the Pomeranian region, he received the support of Partia Kobiet (German women's party ). In the elections he got 1758 of the votes (39.37% of the whole list in this constituency). The VfZ center-left committee got 2.44% of the vote in Poland and failed to pass the five percent hurdle.

Szwed advocates protecting consumers from monopolies, increasing energy efficiency and developing renewable energies . He is against the construction of nuclear power plants - together with Prof. Krzysztof Żmijewski, for example, he submitted a proposal to replace 20 million lightbulbs with energy-saving lamps. This is a hundred times cheaper than building a nuclear power plant. Szwed is a supporter of egalitarianism , he fights for a policy of equality and the rights of national minorities. As a feminist, he takes part in feminist demonstrations and was a participant in the Congress of Polish Women in 2010, where he co-organized a panel on 'Women and Sustainable Development'. With the Center for Women's Rights he fights against violence, especially against women. Szwed is an activist of the anti-war movement and against globalization. He advocates the knowledge society, environmentally friendly technologies, free culture and free software . He advocates the separation of state and church and promotes the ideological neutrality of the state.
