Darrett Adkins

Darrett Adkins (* in Tacoma / Washington ) is an American cellist, chamber musician and music teacher.

Adkins studied music at the Oberlin Conservatory (Bachelor 1991), at Rice University (Master, 1993) and at the Juilliard School of Music (Doctor of Musical Arts, 2000). His cello teachers were Norman Fischer , Joel Krosnick , Jeannette Chapman and Cordelia Wikarski-Miedel . Since 1995 he has taught chamber music and cello at the Juilliard School, and since 2003 also at the Oberlin Conservatory and the Aspen Music Festival . His students include Steuart Pincombe and Genevieve Guimond .

From 1997 to 2002 Adkins was a member of the Flux Quartet , with which he appeared at festivals in New York, Melbourne and Oslo and made the first complete recording of Morton Feldman's monumental Second Quartet . Since 1998 he has formed the Zephyr Trio with Jeanne Galway (flute) and Jonathan Feldman (piano) , which tours the USA regularly and played the world premiere of Lowell Liebermann's Trio . He is also a member of the Lions Gate Trio with Katie Lansdale (violin) and Florence Millet (piano). As a soloist, he has performed with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra , the Tochio Soloists , the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra , the Seoul's Prime Orchestra , the Cleveland's Red , the Orchestra of St. Luke’s , the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra , the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra and the New Hampshire Symphony Orchestra and is the musical director of the Duke Symphony Orchestra .

Adkins is particularly interested in contemporary music, and he has played the world premieres of the cello concertos by Franco Donatoni , Harrison Birtwistle ( Meridian ), Andrew Mead , Rolf Wallin ( Grund ) and Jeffrey Mumford and the New York premiere of Luciano Berio'ssequence XIV . With the Cleveland's Red he realized the world premiere of Schubert Songbook , a musical drama with orchestrated songs by Schubert , with soprano Arianna Zukerman . Adkins has received the Presser Music Award and the Bunkamura Orchard Hall Award , among others . In 2002 he was made honorary cellist of the Rio de Janeiro International Cello Encounter and received the Cultural Arts Grant of the American-Scandinavian Society in 2004 .
