The End of the World - The 12 Mayan Prophecies is a 2012 Canadian disaster film .

action

On December 21, 2012, a dark star appeared in the sky over a small town of Calvary, and birds were dying for no apparent reason. Jacey celebrates her 18th birthday on the same day. She receives a ring from her grandmother, who seems very concerned about the events. When Jacey puts this on, she is haunted by visions and the birthmark on her arm changes. Her grandmother tells her that this ring has been in her family for generations and that Jacey has been the chosen one. Before she can explain this in more detail, she is killed by a huge icicle falling from the sky.

The disasters keep increasing, and Jacey and her family learn from old Grant that the Maya prophecy will come true that 12 disasters will occur that day and the world will end . According to a millennia-old book, only Jacey could stop events. To do this, however, she needs five rings like the one her grandmother gave her. Meanwhile, the city is hit by earthquakes, cold waves and tornadoes. While Jacey and her father Joseph are looking for the rings, the Mayan book falls into the hands of the industrialist Kane. He interprets the image of the chosen differently, in his opinion Jacey must be sacrificed to stop the end of the world. Meanwhile, the city is cordoned off by a kind of energy dome that prevents all contact with the outside world.

With the help of an ancient Mayan compass, Jacey and Joseph manage to find the rings. Kane, who tries several times to sacrifice Jacey, is overwhelmed and killed. When the city is on the verge of being destroyed by the 12 volcanoes that surround it, Jacey succeeds in preventing the apocalypse.

reception

The End of the World - The 12 Mayan Prophecies received mostly negative reviews. The New York Times gave the film the worst rating in all of its “classic rating categories” and described it as a “ridiculous mess”. In the New York Daily News, referring to the original title The 12 Disasters of Christmas , the film was named “13. Catastrophe at Christmas ”. The site moviemaze.de calls the film “a moderately exciting and obviously cheaply produced scavenger hunt” with a “silly and unoriginal plot”, but praises the “good craftsmanship” and the performance of the main actors.

background

The original title of the film refers to the Christmas carol The Twelve Days of Christmas . According to the film, the song originally came from the Maya , who hid the reference to the five rings in the 5th stanza ("Five Golden Rings") and thus to prevent the end of the world.

The name of the city where the film is set is Calvary . This is the English name of Golgotha , the hill on which Jesus of Nazareth is said to have been crucified . The first names of several main characters (Joseph, Mary, Jude) also refer to the Bible .
