The Secret of the Iron Mask (alternative title: The Iron Mask , international title: The Fifth Musketeer ) is a coat-and-sword film from 1979 by Ken Annakin . It was freely based on the adventure novel The Viscount of Bragelonne (1846) by Alexandre Dumas the Elder .

action

At the center of the action is the unjustly imprisoned and exiled twin brother of the French King Louis XIV . In order to hide his face from others, an iron mask was once put over his head, which he cannot remove himself. The aging D'Artagnan and his musketeer friends try to end this injustice and free the mysterious prisoner. Because only he has a legitimate claim to France's throne. These events lead to numerous mix-ups and intrigues at court.

The Secret of the Iron Mask was produced by S&T Film ( Peter W. Skwara and Manfred Thurau ), Heinz Lazek and Ted Richmond acted as executive producers . The film, shot in English, was made primarily in the Rosenhügel film studios in Vienna, as well as in the area around Vienna, e.g. B. at Kreuzenstein Castle . Throne room scenes were filmed in the Vienna Votive Church .

In Germany, The Secret of the Iron Mask was first shown on VOX on July 24, 1994.

criticism

Films 1993/94 wrote: “Remake of the adventure film The Man in the Iron Mask based on a novel by Dumas, which has little new to offer besides the good cast.” Vincent Canby notes in his New York Times review that the film manages In addition to a cast list as for one of the airport films and despite the amount of intrigues, duels, extensive sword fencing, lavish costumes and even more lavish outfits, to be uniquely stylish and even leave the viewer without participation.
