action

The two orphans Edwin Drood and Rosa Bud were promised each other as children, according to their fathers' wish. As an adult, Edwin actually likes the idea of marrying Rosa. She feels affection for the redhead, but more in the form of a platonic love. Edwin's guardian John Jasper has also fallen in love with Rosa and sees his ward as a competitor who needs to be got out of the way. He's making a plan. Jasper arranges a meeting between the feuding rowdies Edwin and Neville. After this late-night meeting, which was peaceful and uneventful, he strangled Edwin in the local cathedral, suspecting Neville. The whereabouts of the corpse remains uncertain, but Edwin is believed to be dead even if the corpse is not found.

When Rosa is harassed by Jasper, she concludes that Jasper has something to do with Edwin's disappearance. The mayor (Mayor Sapsea) instructs a law firm to clarify the case. The lawyers, together with the clerk, search the cathedral crypt for Edwin's remains. Jasper also appears in the underground passages, mentally foggy from previous opium consumption, and can no longer keep his tongue in check. He not only claims to have strangled Edwin, but also hateful and in the same way his own father. The game of confusion reaches its climax when Edwin suddenly joins the group. He says that out of disappointment at Rosa's rejection he went to Egypt without saying goodbye. Thus it becomes clear that Jasper's described experiences were only hallucinations due to the opium intoxication. Jasper goes completely mad and falls to his death from a balustrade .
