The People (1859)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The people was a London magazine of the German Workers' Education Association in London . The newspaper appeared from May 7, 1859 to August 20, 1859. The newspaper was printed by Fidelio Hollinger .

founding

The people was founded as the official organ of the London Workers' Education Association under the editorship of Elard Biskamp . On May 11, 1859, Biskamp, who had been introduced by Wilhelm Liebknecht , visited Karl Marx and asked him for assistance. Marx promised to promote the paper and agreed to make his articles written for the New York Daily Tribune available to the paper. At Marx's suggestion, on May 14th, in the second issue of the newspaper, an anonymous note appeared about Friedrich Engels ' brochure Po und Rhein . Clerk of the newspaper was Friedrich Lessner . On June 11, 1859, the newspaper reported "that Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Ferdinand Freiligrath , W. Wolff , H. Heise and thus the most important literary forces in our party are determined to support the 'people'". On June 4th (No. 5) part of the foreword to Marx's work " On the Critique of Political Economy " was printed.

Structure of expenses

Each issue had four pages. In addition to articles, there was "correspondence", a "Politische Rundschau", a "Feuilleton" and almost an entire page with mainly commercial advertisements. "Association news" was also published. From number two, the serial novel “The three torments of my heart” was published by “GG”.

Collaboration by Marx and Engels

The focus of Marx and Engels' collaboration was the Italian War of 1859 and the Carl Vogt affair , which Marx described in detail in his book Herr Vogt . It was about how the German workers to this war and the possible influence of Napoleon III. should behave towards Carl Vogt. The leaflet “Zur Warung” played an essential role.

attitude

On August 11, 1859, Fidelio Hollinger asked Marx to pay the bill for numbers 13 to 15 of the newspaper. On August 22nd and September 5th, 1859, he sent Marx further bills. At the end of September 1859, Hollinger sued Marx for payment of the outstanding amounts. In a letter to Friedrich Engels, Marx described Hollinger as a “bastard” because Hollinger had declared Marx to be the “owner” of the people.
