Karl Blind

Karl Blind (born September 4, 1826 in Mannheim ; † May 31, 1907 in London ) was a German revolutionary and journalist .

Life

Karl Blind's democratic convictions arose during his studies at the universities of Bonn and Heidelberg . Inspired by the French Revolution , he saw a complete change in the political situation, the result of which was to be a united and democratic Germany, as necessary. He joined the Old Heidelberg Burschenschaft Allemannia in 1844, the Neckarbund Heidelberg Burschenschaft in 1845 and the Bonn General Burschenschaft in 1846 .

The results of the work of the Frankfurt pre-parliament during the revolution of 1848 did not seem to him sufficient in this respect; For this reason he joined Friedrich Hecker , then Gustav Struve, in the Baden Revolution in the spring of 1848 . He was captured during the Struve Putsch , sentenced to eight years in a fortress and imprisoned in Rastatt fortress . However, his imprisonment ended the following year, when the Rastatt occupation mutinied on May 11, 1849 and released the political prisoners with whom the insurgent soldiers sympathized.

The revolutionary state committee, which had taken over government power in Baden after Grand Duke Leopold had fled , sent Blind to Paris , where it was supposed to obtain the support of President Louis Napoléon for the revolution in Baden. However, on June 13, 1849, he was accused of conspiring with Alexandre Ledru-Rollin against Louis Napoléon, which led to his expulsion from France.

After his expulsion from France and the failure of the revolution in Baden, Blind initially stayed with his family in Belgium before settling in London in 1852. He continued to campaign for his democratic and republican ideals with writings and was in contact with numerous like-minded people across Europe, including Giuseppe Mazzini , Giuseppe Garibaldi , Lajos Kossuth and Louis Blanc . He commented on conflicts and freedom movements, for example supporting the cause of the northern states in the American Civil War and that of the Poles in the January uprising against Russia in 1863.

During his time in London, Karl Blind was extremely active as a writer in various fields; he has written books on politics , history , mythology , German and Indian literature and biographies . In addition, he worked as a correspondent for several German newspapers . 1907 died blind in his home in Hampstead to heart failure .

Karl Blind was the stepfather of Ferdinand Cohen-Blind , who carried out an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Otto von Bismarck in 1866 , and of Mathilde Blind , who made a name for herself as a poet in England. Karl Blind's brother Valentin was also a fraternity member and was also involved in the March Revolution of 1848/1849.
