The Miracle of Papu is a French film farce by Jean-Pierre Mocky from 1987.
action
Papu is a day thief, works for his parish in Paris in a warehouse where used items are sold, and gets additional funds through shell tricks . When he was selling balloons to tourists at the Eiffel Tower, he was hit by a car. From then on, he simulates a bilateral leg paralysis in order to collect the insurance money. Those who caused the accident suspect that he can walk. A lawyer overhears Papu among his community. At the suggestion of his friend Sabine, he plans to join the pilgrimage to Lourdes and hope for a miracle in the holy water. If he can then walk again, he does not have to pay back the insurance money. In order to prevent this trick, the accident perpetrators commission the silent insurance agent Ronald Fox Terrier to investigate. He is supposed to expose Papu as a fraudster while driving to Lourdes.
Papu, Sabine and their parish priest, Abbé Humus, are traveling to Lourdes. Sabine has long been in love with the Abbé and hopes that one day he will live up to his suggestion and get married. The abbe, in turn, is embarrassed during the trip by pickpocket Angelica, whose advantages include not wearing underwear under her skirt. The Abbé, for his part, is coveted by the traveling monseigneur who likes young men. In the cinema wagon, which is supposed to get the travelers in the mood with films on Lourdes, Papu suddenly gets up. Angelica realizes that he is not handicapped at all. She demands from Papu part of the expected sum insured in order to keep her silent. Ronald did not notice the maneuver, but Joulin, who was traveling on behalf of the city of Lourdes, did. There has been no miracle there for ten years. Papu's "cure" would benefit Lourdes' tourism, so Joulin also makes a deal with Papu: the press is allowed to be present for his miracle, while Joulin does not tell anyone about Papu's hoax.
Arriving in Lourdes, things get complicated because Papu walks away disguised with Joulin, while first the monseigneur and later Ronald drive in Papu's wheelchair and the mute Ronald is accused of dizziness by the wheelchair group. At the end everyone goes to the holy grotto. Papu is driven into the water prematurely and suddenly can no longer feel his legs. Ronald, on the other hand, can suddenly speak, even if only in English. Lourdes has its miracle. Papu is desperate, even if he is now entitled to receive the sum insured. A tourist, on the other hand, who doubts Ronald's miracle cure, ends up having a sudden heart attack and dies.
