action

The film is set in Warsaw in the early 1930s and observes the lives of people who have to live in close communities. In a tenement building in Warsaw's old town, some people share a room as sub-tenants. These people are still looking for their place in the new Polish republic of the interwar years. Some of them are unemployed, some are still students. Lucjan Salis is a promising poet. The law student Józef is about to take his exam, in which he has laid his entire future. When he fails the exam, he commits suicide . Like Lucjan, Zygmunt is a poem writer. However, he has already given up any hope that his poems will eventually be published and that he can make a living from his work. His brother Mietek is much more optimistic. He is completely committed to the left movement and agitates against the current Polish regime. A friend of these tenants is Dziadzia, who presents himself as an extraordinary bohemian , but who ultimately doesn't know what to do with himself. They all look for happiness and fail because of it. Lucjan eventually dies of tuberculosis .

Reviews

“Polish social analysis that encourages reflection on the position of the individual in the collective. Excellent photos. "

“Exact and loving description of a bohemian group of young people in Poland from 1919, characterized by external misery, extravagant imagination and hopelessness. A current significance cannot be recognized in the film, but it is because of its artistic quality under which the exact comprehension des Milieu is to be emphasized, worth seeing from 16. "
