action

According to her father's wishes, the owner of a large fortune should only leave the entire property to one of her two grandchildren - two boys. The woman chooses to give the entire inheritance to the one grandchildren. Then she is tormented by a vision and sees how the granddaughter of the other, disadvantaged grandchild will one day grow up as an orphan. The girl will fall into the hands of an unscrupulous adventure and will eventually end up on the gallows.

In order to prevent this horrible fate, the old lady now decides to favor the other grandchild. But this decision also turns out to be fatal in a second vision: for now the grandson of the disinherited will become a criminal and also end up under the gallows. The testator therefore decides, contrary to the wishes of her own father, to the only true, Solomonic solution: she divides the inheritance, the “golden calf”, into two equal parts and thus follows her sense of justice.

criticism

In Paimann's film lists you can read: “The subject is interesting, the directing is fast, the portrayal in all roles is very good, Henny Porten is particularly interesting in some scenes of the first plot, where she managed to break free from the usual template. The presentation and photos are awesome work, the latter especially notable in the beautiful outdoor shots near Dürnstein. "
