David Horler

David "Dave" Horler (born September 10, 1943 in Lymington ) is a British jazz trombonist , band leader and arranger.

Live and act

Horler comes from a musical family; his father Ronnie Horler (1920–2005) was a professional big band trumpeter and his younger brother John is also a jazz musician. From the age of five he learned piano; The valve trombone was added at the age of fourteen . He studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1960 to 1963 . He was a member of the BBC Radio Orchestra from 1970 to 1973 before working freelance for Ella Fitzgerald , Bing Crosby and others. He also directed a jazz quintet with Jimmy Hastings . In 1980 he joined the WDR Dance Orchestra under Werner Müller as first trombonist, composer and arranger , from which the WDR Big Band Cologne emerged , which he helped shape and of which he remained a member until 2008. He also worked there as an assistant conductor. He currently heads the large-format Rhine Phillis Jazz Orchestra.

Horler can also be heard on albums by Kurt Edelhagen , Kenny Wheeler , Tony Kinsey , Peter Herbolzheimer , Heinz Kretzschmar , Peter Herborn , Vince Mendoza and his daughter Natalie Horler .
