David Abercrombie

David Thomas Abercrombie (born June 6,  1867 in Baltimore , Maryland ; † August 29, 1931 in Ossining , New York ) founded the Abercrombie & Fitch company in New York in 1892 and ran it together with Ezra Fitch for years.

Life

Family and education

David Thomas Abercrombie was in on June 6, 1867 Baltimore ( Maryland , the son of a wealthy couple John Morrison Jack and Elizabeth Sarah Abercrombie) (born Daniel) was born. His father was a lawyer , his mother a housewife . Abercrombie attended regular classes at times, but was often taught by private tutors .

At the age of 18, Abercrombie moved to Baltimore City College , which he left with an above-average grade as an engineer . In August 1889 he found work with an architectural firm in Baltimore. The work did not bring Abercrombie the desired result. That's why he moved to New York City .

Abercrombie & Fitch

On June 4, 1892, Abercrombie opened a fishing tackle store on South Street in downtown Manhattan . He quickly made friends with the manager Ezra Fitch , who was one of his regular customers and believed strongly in the success of the young company. Therefore, in February 1900, he finally bought 49% of the shares. In 1904 it was renamed Abercrombie & Fitch Co. Later, Abercrombie and Fitch got into a dispute over expansion visions on the part of Fitch. Ezra Fitch wanted to branch offices throughout the state of New York open and the company to a specialty store for camping utensils expand. However, Abercrombie preferred to concentrate on expanding its Manhattan business and was against Fitch's plans. The cooperation between the two gentlemen failed because of this question. Therefore, Abercrombie asked Fitch to buy its shares. In September 1907 he sold all of his shares and left the company.

David Abercrombie had four children with his wife, Lucy Abbot Cate: Elizabeth, Lucy, David and Abbott.

By selling the company, the Abercrombie family was able to buy a property in Ossining . On August 29, 1931, David Abercrombie died of rheumatic fever in a castle called "Elda" ( initials of his children's first names) on his estate in Ossining at the age of 64 .
