He was the only child of Roswell Reed Fitch and Margaretta Wyanna Fitch (nee Hasbrouck), who died three weeks after he was born. He went hiking and fishing frequently on the family estate . He owned a yacht and liked mountain climbing .

Abercrombie & Fitch

Ezra Fitch enjoyed outdoor sports and spent his free time sailing , climbing and fishing . So he was a regular at Abercrombie Co., a fishing tackle shop on South Street in downtown Manhattan . Fitch quickly made friends with owner David Abercrombie .

As he strongly believed in the success of the young company and was "restless and bored" in his job, he bought 49% of the shares in the growing company in February 1900 and thus became a partner of David Abercrombie. Therefore, the company was renamed in 1904 and was now called Abercrombie & Fitch Co. This included Fitch's last name in the company name.

Although both men shared the company's success, they argued over who was the better manager . They later got into an argument over Fitch's expansion visions. Ezra Fitch wanted to branch offices throughout the state of New York open up the company into a specialty store for camping utensils to expand and make it accessible to the public. Internally, Fitch was considered an innovator who claimed that "it can't be done" was not in his vocabulary. Abercrombie, on the other hand, wanted to keep the company as a business for the elite , focused on expanding the Manhattan business and was against these plans. The cooperation between the two gentlemen failed because of this question.

Therefore, Abercrombie asked Fitch to buy its shares. In September 1907 he sold all of his shares and left the company.

In 1909 Fitch created its first catalog for the mail order business .

death

In 1928, Fitch withdrew from the company and left it to new management. He died on June 16, 1930 on his yacht in Santa Barbara , California .
