David Bee

David Bee (actually Ernest Jean Craps ; * 1903 in Brussels ; † 1992 ) was a Belgian jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet , harp , piano ), arranger , composer and band leader .

Live and act

Bee first played with Arthur Briggs , in the late 1920s in Paris with his band The Red Beans , with which the first recordings were made, but which remained unpublished ( I Wonder Why You Made Me Cry , Sonny Boy ). In 1930 he worked in New York as an arranger for Luis Russell ( Muiggin 'Lightly ); after his return to Europe he was in Milan woodwind and arranger in the Orchestra Jazz Columbia , with which recordings for Columbia were made. In 1932 he played in Brussels in the formation of Radiolians under the direction of Gus Deloof , with Fud Candrix as arranger. In the mid-1930s he traveled to the United States again, where he met Stuff Smith and Benny Goodman . After his return he worked in Paris, Cannes and Le Touquet as an arranger in the orchestras of Jerry Mengo , Willie Lewis , Benny Carter and Serge Glykson . David Bee co-founded the Jazz Club of Belgium with Félix Faecq, Jack Kluger , Robert Goffin and Peter Packay .

In the second half of the decade he worked on recordings for Robert De Kers , Jo Boullon , Billy Colson and Serge Glykson; in the early 1940s he worked on Gus Deloof , Chas Dolne , Eddie Tower , Robert Bosmans , Bobby Naret and Gene Dersin ; he also played with Jean Omer and Robert De Kers. With Chas Dolne he founded the formation Le Swingtet [te] , in which he played the harp ( St. Louis Blues ), and he also worked with Django Reinhardt and Tino Rossi . After the war he played again with Deloof, in the field of classical music with Jean Delhez (1949).

In the 1950s, Bee led her own bands; his musicians included Philippe Brun , Benny Vasseur , Michel Ramos , Léo Petit , Lucien Simoën and Jerry Mengo . In 1956 he presented the album Belgian Jazz (Bally); 1958/59 the LPs Dancing at the Brussels Fair (Coral), Chansons à ne pas chanter ( Philips ), Dancing Through the USA, Dancing Through Paris and Let's Dance (Pye Golden Guinea Records) followed. During this time he wrote songs with his wife, the singer Claude Alix ; With her song Le plus beau jour de ma vie , Mony Marc represented Belgium at the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. His compositions, such as Vladivostok (Vent d'Est) , Charleston Daisy , Pamplona , Baby Lou or Rendezvous in Lausanne , were also by Ted Lewis , Earl Hines , Luis Russell ( High Tension ), Arthur Briggs and Louis Armstrong . In the mid-1960s he led the Dixieland band Brother Powell and His Dixie Rag-a-Jazz Band , the Herman Sandy , Janot Morales, Jules Van Dijck (trumpets), Albert Brinkhuizen (trombone), Jose Paessens (reeds), Guy Dossche (saxophone), Ivon De Bie (piano), Frank Sanders (banjo), Paul Dubois (bass) and Jos Aerts (drums). In the field of jazz he was involved in 72 recording sessions between 1928 and 1968.
