David Clodius

David Clodius (born May 14, 1644 in Hamburg , † September 10, 1684 in Gießen ) was a German orientalist and Protestant theologian.

Life

Born the son of a businessman, he received his first lessons from private tutors and, after the death of his father in 1661, attended the Hamburg grammar school. With previous language skills, he moved to Kiel University in 1665 and went to Gießen University in 1667 . Following his studies, he embarked on a scholarly trip that was customary at the time, which took him to Holland , Belgium , England and Germany .

He returned to Hamburg via Wittenberg in 1669, where he was accepted as a candidate for the ministry and was appointed to Giessen as a full professor of oriental languages the following year . After he took up the professorship in 1671, he took on an extraordinary professorship at the theological faculty in 1676, received his doctorate in theology in 1678 and took over the preaching position of his father-in-law Johann Nikolaus Misler at the Giessen city church in 1684 . However, it did not last long, as he died at the age of 43.
