David Geissmar

David Geissmar , also: Geismar ( 1797 in Breisach am Rhein , Upper Austria - 1879 in Alzey , Grand Duchy of Hesse ) was a district rabbi in Baden with a moderate liberal orientation.

David Geissmar was the son of Jakob Geismar and Süssel, née Schwob, and while studying the Talmud in Fürth he married Jette, née Falkenau (1799–1861), a daughter of the Dayan Josua Moses Falkenau. After receiving his rabbinical diplomas in Fürth and Karlsruhe , he became a (unpaid) rabbi in Breisach around 1820 and then a rabbi in Eppingen around 1824 . From March 1827 he became a district rabbi in Sinsheim . From 1848 he was a member of the religious conference of the Upper Council of the Israelites of Baden . David Geissmar introduced the synagogue choir, but rejected the organ in the synagogue .

After his retirement in 1874, he lived with his son, the lawyer Joseph Geißmar in Mannheim . His granddaughter was the doctor Johanna Geissmar (1877–1942) who was murdered in Auschwitz .
