David K. Stewart

David K. Stewart (born August 27, 1937 in Jeffersonville , Indiana , † October 16, 1997 in Los Angeles ) was an American cameraman and film technician who specialized in visual effects .

Life

Born in Indiana, Stewart moved to Los Angeles with his family when he was five. He attended Long Beach City College, which he graduated in photojournalism in 1957 . After briefly working in the Mexico City photography business with his wife , he returned with a low-paying job in the film business. Stewart worked his way up to assistant cameraman and moved to Robert Abel Films in 1971 for five years . His film career began in 1976 when he worked on the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind .

In 1980, Stewart was nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects for Star Trek: The Movie , along with Douglas Trumbull , John Dykstra , Richard Yuricich , Robert Swarthe and Grant McCune . He died on October 16, 1997 of a sudden heart attack in a Los Angeles hospital . He left two sons.
