Player career

Manchester United (1974–1979)

After promotion to the first division at the end of the season United reached McCreery (28 league games / 4 goals) in the Football League First Division 1975/76 third place in the table. In addition to the good league placement, the club moved into the final of the FA Cup 1975/76 , but lost the final game against Southampton FC with 0: 1. McCreery, 18, came on in the 66th minute. Coach Tommy Docherty's team performed even better in the FA Cup in 1976/77 . After goals by Stuart Pearson and Jimmy Greenhoff when Jimmy Case conceded , United won 2-1 against Liverpool. David McCreery came back on after a substitution.

QPR and Tulsa Roughnecks (1979–1982)

After recently reduced working hours at United, he moved to the Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 1979 . In the second division, he quickly earned a regular place, but missed promotion to the first division in fifth. In 1981 he moved to the North American NASL to the Tulsa Roughnecks. In two seasons he played a total of forty-five league games before returning to England in October 1982.

Newcastle United (1982-1989)

With his teammates Kevin Keegan , Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley , he led Newcastle United to promotion to the first division in the second year. After relegation in the Football League First Division 1984/85 , the club around regular player David McCreery found itself in the following years mostly in the middle of the table before Newcastle in 1988/89 relegated bottom of the table in the second division.

After further positions at GIF Sundsvall , Heart of Midlothian , Hartlepool United and Coleraine FC , he held the position of player-coach at his last two clubs, Carlisle United and Hartlepool United.

Northern Ireland National Team (1976-1990)

David McCreery made his debut on May 8, 1976 for the Northern Irish national team in a 3-0 defeat in Scotland. In 1982 he was nominated by national coach Billy Bingham in the Northern Irish World Cup squad for the 1982 World Cup in Spain and played all three group games . After the surprising group win against hosts Spain, he was also used in the two group games of the intermediate round, but retired with his team after a 2-2 defeat against Austria and a 4-1 defeat against France.

Four years later he was nominated again for the Northern Irish World Cup squad and used in the three group matches. Northern Ireland was eliminated from the 1986 World Cup in third place after the group stage (1: 1 against Algeria, 1: 2 against Spain and 0: 3 against Brazil) .
