David Prain

Sir David Prain (born July 11, 1857 in Fettercairn , Kincardineshire , † March 16, 1944 in Whyteleafe , Surrey ) was a Scottish botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Prain ".

Live and act

Prain graduated from Aberdeen University . From 1887 to 1889 he was curator of the Herbarium of Calcutta . From 1905 to 1922 he was director of the Botanical Garden in Kew . In 1935 he was awarded the Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London . In 1888 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . Since 1909 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , since 1920 a member of the National Academy of Sciences .

Prain was the editor of volumes 133 to 146 of Curtis's Botanical Magazine (1907 to 1920) and volumes 28 to 30 of Hooker's Icones Plantarum (1905 to 1994). He also edited volumes 6 (2) and 9 of the Flora of Tropical Africa by Daniel Oliver . For this work he edited the parts "Euphorbiaceae" (in volume 6 (1), together with Nicholas Edward Brown and John Hutchinson ) and "Cycadaceae" (in volume 6 (2)).

Honors

The genus Prainea King ex Hook. f. from the mulberry family (Moraceae) has been named after him.
