David Hugh Segal (born March 20, 1937 in London ) is a former British sprinter . The two-time Olympian was next to a medal each with the British and English sprint relay at the Olympic Games , Commonwealth Games and European Athletics Championships in 1958, Vice European Champion over 200 meters .

Segal took part in his first Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 ; both over 100 meters and over 200 meters he was eliminated in the run-up, with the British 4 x 100 meter relay he reached the finals, but they fell short of the medal ranks as fifth.

In 1958 he competed for England at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff ; He again missed the finals over 100 and 220 yards, but with the relay (Segal, Roy Sandstrom , Peter Radford and Adrian Breacker ) he won the title. A few weeks later he won his only individual medal in a major event at the European Championships in Stockholm : silver over 200 m, silver he also won with the British sprint relay (Peter Radford, Roy Sandstrom, Segal, Adrian Breacker).

1958 and 1959 Segal was also British champion, and 1960 British runner-up over 220 yards .

At the end of 1959 the American Furman University advertised in the Daily Mirror with scholarships for British sprint talents, Segal showed interest and enrolled in the winter of 1960, despite the threat of the British federation not to nominate him for the Olympic Games in Rome . Despite the threats, Segal took part in the Olympic Games in Rome, over 200 m he was disqualified in the semifinals, with the sprint relay ( Peter Radford , David Jones , Segal and Nick Whitehead ) he was third.

After the Games, Segal (1961-1963) was very successful for Furman in the sprint and hurdles , so in 2008 he was inducted into the Furman University Athletics Hall of Fame .
