David Wessel
David Wessel (born 1942 in Belleville , Illinois ; † October 13, 2014 ) was an American musicologist , composer and improvisation musician .
Live and act
Wessel, who was interested in jazz in high school , studied mathematical statistics at the University of Illinois , where around 1963 he heard Lejaren Hiller talk about the application of information theory to music analysis. In 1972 he completed a psychological dissertation at Stanford University ; he did his doctorate on the relationship between psychoacoustic perception and music synthesis. He also took percussion lessons from John Chowning here . In 1969 he took part in the first computer music workshop at Stanford University.
After working at Michigan State University , he went to Paris to IRCAM in 1976 , where he initially dealt with the control of the timbres . Here he founded the pedagogical department in 1979, which combined the musical and scientific branches of the IRCAM. In 1985 he founded the computer music department, where Miller Puckette developed the Max program.
In 1988 Wessel became Professor of Music and Director of the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies at the University of California, Berkeley . In addition to his scientific work went Wessel with jazz and improvisation musicians such as Roscoe Mitchell , Thomas Buckner , Earl Howard , George Lewis , Steve Coleman , Ushio Torikai , Vinko Globokar , Frances-Marie Uitti , Jin Hi Kim , Shafqat Ali Khan and Laetitia Sonami on . In 1998 he released the album Situations I for Computer and Voice ; his composition Situations I was also interpreted by Buckner. His students include Ronald Bruce Smith , Matthew Wright , Georg Hajdu , Anthony de Ritis , Michael Zbyszynski , Ali Momeni , Roberto Morales and Vijay Iyer .
