Davide Albertario
Davide Albertario (born February 16, 1846 in Filighera , † September 21, 1902 in Carenno ) was a charismatic Catholic priest , political publicist and important anti-Semite.
Life
Albertario lived in the troubled period of the second half of the 19th century , which was the fulfillment of the Revolution with the creation of the Freemason- inspired Risorgimento . It was also the unification of Italy, i.e. the beginning of the Kingdom of Italy during the Vatican Council and the resulting overthrow of Rome in 1870 with the loss of the secular power of the popes. Albertario lived under the long pontificate of Pius IX. and Leo XIII. in which the difficult situation of contradictions between the intransigent Catholic Church and the unitary state gradually solidified.
Albertario comes from a middle-class Lombard family and was born the fifth of fourteen children to Pietro Paolo Albertario and Marianna Bianchi. He trained as a priest and graduated from the Gregorian University in Rome . The effects of Pope Pius IX's failure in the Risorgimento, which was supported by the liberals, he could not get over and were the cause of his rigorous attitude towards the liberals.
In 1864 he became co-editor of the Catholic-liberal newspaper Osservatore cattolico , which was supposed to counteract the liberal press in Italy. When he became the sole editor in 1873, the paper became even more intransigent; With his polemical reporting, Albertario got many enemies among liberals and independents. As a result, there were court hearings that damaged the reputation of the Catholic Church. This banished Albertario to Naples in the mid-1880s .
He remained uncomfortable for the church: from Naples he continued to intrigue against the liberals and sympathize with the democrats, who campaigned for improvements in social issues. After the Bava Beccaris massacre in Milan in May 1898, Albertario was imprisoned for a year.
A focus of his pamphlets deals with anti-Jewish polemics, which were particularly prominent in Catholic Italy in the 1880s and 90s. The press organ he published also supported anti-Semitic political groups in Germany and Austria during this period . For Alberto, the Jewish enemy image was to be understood primarily as a rejection of liberal capitalism and other modern excesses such as the promotion of liberalism.
