action

Zoe Parker is studying medicine. She has a stalker named Max who always wants her blood drawn. Last time he scratched her name on her arm. A little later she goes to a college party. The beer is hidden in the morgue. There her Max is lurking and trying to rape her. But at this very moment a zombie attack unleashed. Zoe escapes, but America is soon occupied by the zombies known as "Rotter".

Five years later: The few survivors have withdrawn in bunkers and forts. Zoe now lives in the High Rock Emergency Bunker. The camp is led by Miguel and is under strict military surveillance. Zoe works there both on a cure and as a doctor. Lily, a little girl, is seriously ill with bacterial pneumonia . Antibiotics could help, but they are not available in the camp.

Zoe manages to convince her friend Baca, Miguel's brother, to go on a military mission to their old hospital. Although Miguel has concerns, the mission is carried out. But Zoe also wants to take old mementos and so the mission goes wrong: a soldier is infected and dies shortly afterwards. But at least the cure for Lucy is certain. However, Max survived as a Rotter and takes in the weather. He can actually sneak into the camp and cause a bloodbath there.

Ultimately, Max is overwhelmed, but Zoe discovers in him the missing link between Rotter and human. She wants to use his blood to develop a vaccine that can save humanity. Despite tensions between Miguel and her, she can ultimately convince. She gets 48 hours. Max becomes her test subject. But she divides the camp into two camps. When more men die in another action to retrieve fresh Rotter blood, Miguel goes mad.

Ultimately, she manages to extract the vaccine. But Max can break free. A zombie attack begins, in the course of which numerous soldiers die, including Miguel. As the situation calms down, Zoe discovers that Baca has been bitten. She uses the vaccine and uses it to save Baca's life. After the bunker is rebuilt, Zoe sends a radio message that she has a vaccine.

background

In 2013, Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman , the producers of Texas Chainsaw 3D secured the rights to a remake of George A. Romero's 1985 film Zombie 2. The remake was then tackled with Millennium Films.

In the end, the film was mostly shot in Bulgaria. The budget was about $ 8 million. The Spanish director Hèctor Hernández Vicens directed the film. The film was released in the United States on January 5, 2018. A DVD and Blu-Ray premiere followed in Germany on January 25, 2018 via EuroVideo. The film was also streamed on Netflix in April .

reception

The film was generally rated rather poorly. Horrormagazin.de described the film as a " rock-hard, but somehow sterile [n] contribution from a fairly well-worn genre. Anyone who wants to see blood again is well served, but that's all there is to it . "

On RogerEbert.com, Brian Tallerico drew parallels to Roger Ebert's review of the original film. Just like Ebert in 1985, he would watch people who don't interest him for 90 minutes screaming at each other and making pretty stupid decisions. Robert Abele saw it similarly in the Los Angeles Times . While the original wasn't Romero's best film, it at least sparked a debate. In this remake, you'd only listen to thin characters in stupid dialog, and they behave even more stupidly. As an example, he cites how Zoe, who allegedly suffered trauma after the attempted rape, flirts at the captured Max and even lets himself be licked on the face.
