content

The summer vacation has started. Julius, Richard and Anne are allowed to spend their holidays in the rock house, with their cousin Georg, her parents and the dog Tim. But shortly after arriving by train, the siblings have to find out that Georg is to be punished for poor academic performance. Her father has hired a tutor named Mr. Roland to give Georg tutoring. Conveniently, they should now also be taught at the same time. Neither of them really like the forced tutor. The dog Tim in particular shows no friendliness towards him.

But there are also hours when the friends can enjoy the vacation. A visit to Mr. and Mrs. Sanders' farm is a welcome change. The Sanders willingly reveal the secrets that are hidden in their home. On the upper floor there is a white cupboard with a back wall that can be pushed aside. A person can hide behind this back wall without any problems.

When Tim comes across the Sanders' black and white cat, the inevitable hunt begins. The cat, however, quickly rescues itself on a grandfather clock and Tim immediately tries to jump after her. In doing so, he presses in part of the wood paneling. Georg wants to calm Tim down and so she discovers the hole Tim has exposed, a secret compartment. Richard, who examines the hiding place more closely, finds a roll of canvas. The canvas roll contains a card with illegible writing. The five suspect that the plan shows the access to an underground secret passage and so the search begins.

Not enough of the excitement, Georg's father soon discovered that important papers for his latest invention were missing. The friends soon suspect the unloved head of house, because recently he has been meeting two strange men who have rented a room in the Sanders' farm. The Five Friends are also following this trail.

Finally they discover the secret passage that leads from the rock house directly to the Sanders' farm and has its exit in the white cupboard that they had examined days before. The two strangers are housed in the said room with the white cupboard. The friends secretly search the room and discover Uncle Quentin's formulas. So the formulas are saved and the two scoundrels, as well as Mr. Roland, who is actually in league with the thieves, are arrested by the police.
