Dead Brothers
The Dead Brothers are a folk band from Geneva . Founded in 1999, they call themselves a “funeral band” and fuse country , waltz , blues , punk , rockabilly , chansons and Balkan folk. The quartet replaces the bass as an instrument with the tuba. They sing in German, but mostly in English and French, and perform bizarre and theatrical concerts. They play a lot of their own compositions, but also songs by Hank Williams , The Cramps , Serge Gainsbourg and Marlene Dietrich .
Band history
The head of the quartet is Alain Croubalian (formerly Maniacs ). The Dead Brothers have released several albums and tour Europe regularly. In 2002 you wrote the musical Day of the Dead (about death) for the Swiss national exhibition Expo.02 and the music for the movie Flammend 'Herz by Andrea Schuler and Oliver Ruts about three old German tattooists . “What the dead brothers make of swamp blues , country and gypsy jazz is also unconventional [...] and everything is lively and moribund” .
2006 Documentary celebrated Death Is Not the End of MA Littler on the Dead Brothers premiere in Bern .
In 2008 Alain Croubalian renamed the band Dead Brothers Sweet String Orchestra , new members were: Matthias Lincke (violin, mandolin), Stefan Baumann (cello), Patrick Kessler (double bass). Resli Burri (formerly Patent Ochsner ) plays regularly.
On March 26, 2010 the band released the album The 5th Sin-Phonie , now again under the old name Dead Brothers. Balts Nill (drums, ex- Stiller Has ) played as a guest , the CD / LP was mixed by Michael Ilberg ( Tocotronic , Herbert Grönemeyer , The Hives ). The album includes eleven original compositions as well as cover versions of Bela Lugosi's Dead ( Bauhaus ) and Teenage Kicks ( The Undertones ): “Deeply sad blues, restrained happy folk tunes with Appenzell echoes, lively Cajun and thoughtful chamber music are now part of the repertoire. Everything arranged much more calmly than before, but therefore not presented with less intensity. ” “ The album convinces with its instrumental sophistication and the power of the statements. A great album. " , A US critic calls it " melancholic, intense, dark, eerie, beautiful, wild, poetic [...] its sound resembles a force of nature, like a shipwreck slowly sinking into the icy salt water of the turbulent sea " .
Theater music
In addition to albums, concerts and film music, the Dead Brothers and Alain Croubalian have regularly composed music for plays ( Wilhelm Tell 2003/04 at the Schauspielhaus Zürich ), and in 2005 they played at the Schauspielhaus Basel in the Threepenny Opera and in Orpheus in der Unterwelt in the Schlachthaus in Bern.
On January 14, 2012, Stories from the Vienna Woods by Ödön von Horváth with the music of Alain Croubalian will premiere at the Schauspielhaus Zurich . Directed by Karin Henkel . The reviews were good: “It's unbelievable what the musicians around Alain Croubalian put down with their instruments for a feast for the ears in the Schauspielhaus. That alone is worth the visit to this all-round successful 'Wiener Wald' production. The applause was appropriate. ” There was further praise from Germany: “ In Zurich it is the famous "Dead Brothers" around Alain Croubalian who, in their boneless costumes, contribute a morbid and artistically sentimental, worn-out soundtrack. ” .
Further theater productions are planned for 2012, such as the premiere of Winterzeit Exit , with Alain Croubalian revising Schubert's song cycle Die Winterreise to a "gothic country version" in the Freiburg Theater .
On January 11, 2013, the production " Elektra (Sophokles) " premiered at the Schauspielhaus Zürich (Director: Karin Henkel ), Croubalian is responsible for the music. The production received excellent reviews, as did the music: "Strong texts, strong sound" it was said, "with a potentiation of the theatrical means, grand gestures, powerful images, video, music (the blues by Alain Croubalian)". "(...) the densest phases of the staging are atmospherically reinforced by (...) Croubalian" and "Henkel, (...) and Alain Croubalian, who is responsible for the music, do everything possible to keep the company from being to threaten any didactic paleness - a little irony included ” .
