Dead Heart in a Dead World is the fourth studio album by the American progressive / thrash metal band Nevermore . It was released by Century Media on October 17, 2000 .

Origin and style

Dead Heart in a Dead World was first recorded with Andy Sneap . For the first time Jeff Loomis played the guitars completely himself. Another innovation was the use of seven-string guitars. The album was made in the Village Studio in Tornillo , near El Paso , Texas , with outside temperatures above 40 degrees. The studio is a hacienda- like building in the desert. With The Sound of Silence , a Simon and Garfunkel classic was musically arranged completely new in a progressive thrash version, only the text was retained. The Heart Collector and Believe in Nothing are power ballads , and Insignificant also contains quieter passages. The band deliberately wanted to be “a little catchier”. Warrel Dane's vocals were partly based on old Sanctuary songs.

“The title of the album already reveals that we are a melancholy troupe from rainy Seattle ; But people now expect such lyrics from us too. "

- Warrel Dane

In retrospect, Loomis said the following about the album:

Dead Heart ... is my personal favorite. Especially because I had so much fun in the studio with our then producer Andy Sneap. There was an almost magical connection, and Dead Heart ... is also the high point of our work so far in terms of sound. Besides, in my opinion, there isn't a bad song on the record. "

- Jeff Loomis 2003

reception

Boris Kaiser from Rock Hard spoke of the "masterpiece of one of the most gifted bands of today". The guitar sound, the rhythm section and the songwriting were particularly popular with him . He gave Evolution 169 and The Heart Collector as tips for playing and gave it nine and a half out of ten points. Vincent Jeffries called Dead Heart in a Dead World possibly the band's most mature work. He highlighted The River Dragon Has Come and We Disintegrate as examples of "Loomis' dissonant , down-tuned grooves ". The rating was four out of five stars, and the “AMG Album Pick” award was also given.
