Debbie Shapiro

Debbie Shapiro Gravitte (born September 29, 1954 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American actress and singer .

Life

Debbie Shapiro made her Broadway debut in They're Playing Our Song (1979-1981). She played other roles in Perfectly Frank (1980), Blues in the Night (1982), Zorba (1983-1984) and Les Misérables (1994). For Jerome Robbins' Broadway (1989-1990) she received the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and was nominated for the New York Showstopper Award .

With her nightclub program, Shapiro has performed in New York, London and Atlanta City, where she welcomed Jay Leno , Harry Anderson and George Burns as guests. Her vocal repertoire includes songs by Sammy Fain , Paul Francis Webster , Jule Styne , Jerry Herman , Alan Menken and Stephen Sondheim .

She starred in the 8-part CBS series Trial an Error from 1988, but only three episodes were broadcast. She also appeared in the NBC series Pursuit of Happiness and the PBS productions Live from the Kennedy Center , Boston Pops Celebrate Bernstein and Ira Gershwin's 100th Birthday Celebration (from the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall ).

In the movie Isn't she great? ( Isn't She Great ; with Bette Midler ) she had an appearance in 2000 as Eydie Gormé . With the New York City Ballet she appeared in Peter Martins Thou Swell at Lincoln Center .

Private life

Shapiro has been married to actor Beau Gravitte since 1986 .
