Delara Burkhardt

Delara Burkhardt (born November 3, 1992 in Hamburg ) is a German politician ( SPD ) from Kiel . She has been a member of the European Parliament since 2019 .

Life

education and profession

Burkhardt grew up in Siek and graduated from the Stormarn School in Ahrensburg in 2012 . From 2012 to 2016 she completed a bachelor's degree in sociology and political science at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . In 2016 she began a master's degree in social economics at the University of Hamburg . Burkhardt received a scholarship from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation .

From 2012 to 2014 Burkhardt worked as a student trainee for the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament member Tobias von Pein . From 2014 to 2016 she was employed as a project assistant for the annual preparation of the equality report at the DGB district north . From 2017 to 2019 she worked in a Hamburg communications agency. She lives in Kiel .

Engagement in politics and society

Burkhardt joined the SPD at the age of 15 as part of the educational protests against the G8. In the following she became district chairman of the Jusos Stormarn. In 2012 he was elected to the district executive committee of the SPD Stormarn and in 2014 he was elected to the state executive committee of the Jusos Schleswig-Holstein. In addition, she was Deputy Federal Juso Chairwoman from 2015 to 2019. On the federal executive board she was responsible for equality, migration and peace policy.

Burkhardt is a member of the ver.di trade union and has been a team leader for the trade union vocational school work of the DGB youth since 2017 . As part of this project, schoolchildren at vocational schools are informed about their rights as trainees and employees.

In November 2018, she lost to Enrico Kreft in the election of the top candidate of the SPD Schleswig-Holstein for the 2019 European elections . At the initiative of Andrea Nahles , unlike Kreft, she received one of the top places on the list of candidates proposed by the federal board for the conference of delegates. Nahles wanted to achieve that more young women are represented on the top list positions. The state chairman Ralf Stegner voted against the list proposal and criticized the change. At the delegates' conference she was elected to position 5 on the list and Kreft to position 30.

She was elected to the European Parliament in the election on May 26, 2019 . As a member of parliament, she mainly works in the areas of the environment, in particular species protection and recycling, as well as migration. Burkhardt is a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats in the European Parliament , the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Delegation for relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. She is a deputy in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and in the Delegation for relations with Israel.

Burkhardt has been a member of the Executive Board of the Willy Brandt Center Jerusalem since 2018 . This is a project that aims to ensure peace through encounters between young people from Israel and the Palestinian territories.
