Deni Avdija ( Hebrew דני אבדיה* January 3, 2001 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli basketball player . He plays in the position of small forward and is an Israeli international .

Deni Avdija is the son of the former Israeli basketball player and current coach Zufer Avdija , who was born in Kosovo and is of Muslim - Goran descent. Zufer Avdija was the captain of the top team KK Red Star Belgrade in the 1980s and won the bronze medal with the Yugoslav national team at the 1982 World Cup . In 1990, at the age of 30, he came to Israel as a player and has been based there ever since. His mother is a Jewish Israeli.

Career

Avdija started playing basketball at the age of eight in Bnei Herzlia's youth . In 2013 he moved to the youth department at Maccabi Tel Aviv . There he developed rapidly and took on leadership roles in the various junior selections. He led the youth team Maccabis to three consecutive championship titles from 2017 to 2019. During this time he also took part in international tournaments such as the Euroleague Basketball Next Generation Tournament and the screening event Basketball Without Borders , where he always made a good impression.

In November 2017, at the age of 16, he had already signed a professional contract with the Tzehubim for a period of six years and has since been part of Maccabi's first team. He made his debut in the Israeli top division on November 19, 2017 in a 98-68 home win against Ironi Ness Ziona , in which he received three minutes of playing time. At 16 years and 320 days, he became the youngest player to play a competitive game for Maccabi. In the 2017/18 season he played three league games. In the next season he was used in 33 games, in which he collected 3 points and 1.5 rebounds per encounter in an average of nine minutes played . National team

In August 2017 Avdija took part with the Israeli U16 national team at the U-16 European Championship 2017 in Montenegro , where he led the field in the categories rebounds with 12.6 and assists with 5.3.

In July 2018 he won the U-20 European Championship 2018 in Germany with the U20 . He finished the tournament with an average of 12.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game. His achievements earned him alongside his teammate and Most Valuable Player Yovel Zoosman a nomination for the team of the tournament. The following year, he led the U20 to the title at the U-20 European Championship in his own country in 2019 . In the final against the Spanish selection , he distinguished himself with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 5 ball wins and was then named the best player in the competition. Throughout the tournament, he averaged 18.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists.

On February 21, 2019 Avdija made her debut in the 81:77 home win in qualifying for the 2019 World Cup against Germany in the senior national team . He came to eleven minutes of play, in which he scored a point, collected four rebounds and distributed two basket assists.
