Denis Gratias

Denis Gratias (born September 22, 1947 in Paris ) is a French physicist and crystallographer . He is one of the pioneers of quasicrystals .

Gratias attended the Lycée Janson de Sally in Paris, studied at the École nationale supérieure de chimie de Paris (ENSCP) from 1967 to 1970 and received his doctorate there in 1978 with a dissertation on crystallography (Cristallographie des interfaces dans les cristaux homogènes). As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of California, Berkeley , at the Center d'Études de Chimie Métallurgique (CECM) in Vitry-sur-Seine and at the University of California, Santa Barbara , with John W. Cahn . During this time, the discovery of quasicrystals by Dan Shechtman (1982) fell, which also became the main research area of Gratias. On his return he worked again at the CECM in close collaboration with the Center for Theoretical Physics of the École polytechnique . In 2000 he moved to the Laboratoire d'étude des microstructures (LEM) of CNRS and ONERA in Châtillon . He is the research director of the CNRS. He lives in Sceaux .

From 1991 to 2002 he taught as Chargé de Cours (professor) at the École Polytechnique and from 1997 to 2005 at the ENSCP.

In 1999 he received the Prix Jean Ricard and in 1994 the silver medal of the CNRS. In 1994 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
