The Depenau

The Depenau is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 160 meters long Depenau is located in the southwest of the old town island, in the Marien Quartier . It begins at the Kleine Kiesau , runs westwards down to the Trave and there joins the Obertrave .

history

The Depenau was first mentioned in a document in 1289 as Depenowe . The Low German name, literally “ Tief Au” , refers to a brook with a deep bottom and refers to a watercourse that originally flowed down from the Klingenberg to the Trave. The name has only changed slightly over the centuries. In 1330 it is Dipenowe, 1608 Depenow. The current name Depenau , in use since 1695, was officially established in 1852.

Murnau used the Depenau as a backdrop for one of the key scenes from Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror , in which a never-ending row of coffins descends the street to symbolize the entry of death into Wilborg .

During the air raid on March 29, 1942 , the south side of the street was severely damaged. From the Kleine Kiesau onwards, the historic buildings were destroyed halfway along the street. Its place today is taken by the unadorned rear of a multi-storey car park built in the 1950s in the Marlesgrube .
