Depot III from Dieskau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Custodian III of Dieskau (also hoard III of Dieskau ) is a hoard of Early Bronze Age Unetice culture of Dieskau , a district of the community Kabelsketal in Saalekreis ( Saxony-Anhalt ). It dates between 2000 and 1700 BC. Chr.

Find history

The depot was discovered in 1937 during excavation work in the “von der Heydt” open- cast lignite mine west of Dieskau . It then went to the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale) , where it is now part of the permanent exhibition. The day after the discovery, the site was archaeologically examined. No cultural layers or settlement residues were found, so that it can be assumed that the after-school care center was dumped away from the settlement areas.

The area around Dieskau is extremely rich in finds from the Aunjetitz culture. In other parts of the village a gold hoard ( Depot I ) and in 1904 another important hoard ( Depot II ) with objects made of bronze and amber were discovered. There were also several burial mounds (largely removed in the 19th century) , including the Bornhöck near Raßnitz , the Dieskau burial mound and the Hallberg between Benndorf and Osmünde .

composition

Several ceramic shards were found during the discovery; the hoard was probably originally placed in a jar. The depot contained over 300 bronze objects : 293 hatchets , two fully preserved and one half double axes , four rings , a dagger blade , six spiral arms and other fragments that cannot be precisely identified. With a total weight of 45 kg, the bronze objects, along with the Bennewitz depot and the Dieskau depot II, represent one of the most extensive ensembles of metal objects from the Central German Early Bronze Age.
