Bennewitz depot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bennewitz depot is one of the most important finds from the Early Bronze Age Aunjetitz culture . It dates between 2000 and 1700 BC. The depot was found in a clay pot in 1879 while plowing a field in Bennewitz , today part of the municipality of Kabelsketal ( Saalekreis , Saxony-Anhalt ). The pot is no longer preserved. The depot contains 297 marginal ridge axes of the same design. Taken together, the finds weigh around 70 kg. Apparently the axes were never used.

Today the depot is spread over several collections. 200 axes ended up in the Museum of Prehistory in Berlin , 36 in the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale) and 14 in the State Museum of Prehistory in Dresden . Individual axes can also be found in the cultural history museum in Magdeburg , in the regional history collections of Lutherstadt Eisleben , in the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum in Braunschweig , in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and in the Archaeological Museum in Krakow .

The immediate vicinity of the site is extremely rich in finds from the Aunjetitz culture. To the west of Dieskau , three other important deposits ( I , II and III ) were discovered. There were also several burial mounds (largely removed in the 19th century) , including the Bornhöck near Raßnitz , the Dieskau burial mound and the Hallberg between Benndorf and Osmünde .
